The 9 types of Arthritis

The cartilage (a rubber like padding that covers and protect bones-ends) suffers a gradual damage because of stiffness developed by losing the elasticity. Thus, it no longer acts as a proper shock absorber. Gradual erosion causes stretching of ligaments and eventually initiates the pain. As an outcome the bones start rubbing with each other adding agony and suffering. 

This type of arthritis is widely known. In RA, the synovium is inflamed due to auto-immune attack. This results in stiffness, swelling, pain and deformity at the later stage. RA occurs three times more within the women than men within the ages 40 – 60. It is rarely seen in children. The affected joints are arms, fingers, wrists, knees or legs. The joints are swollen due to inflammation thus felt stiffness especially after waking up at morning. If touched, patients feel tenderness showing red or puffy colors at the affected areas. Patients often feel tired and experience weight losses. The disease can strike at several places simultaneously spreading from smaller to the larger joints; like wrists, ankles and feet to elbows, knees, hips, necks or shoulders.

Also classified as a form of arthritis affecting the bone joints, specially the toes. Gout is seen more among men but the level equalises when women arrive at menopause. Gout is a painful and debilitating disease caused by the uric acid / urate crystal deposition within joints like toes, fingers or ankles creating inflammatory gouty condition. 

Also regarded as an inflammatory autoimmune disease of the spinal joints or between spine and pelvis. The inflamed joints causes oppressive pain that increases with time. The spine experiences stiffness due to the fusion of bones. The exact cause remains unknown but it is suspected to  be genetic. The disease affects more male than the female and often starts at ages of 20 – 40. The pain and stiffness are severe at night or morning but decreases during the day with start of physical activities.

It is an autoimmune disorder affecting about 1.5 million people in the US alone. The disease causes pain and swelling of the joints accompanied by morning stiffness. The effect is symmetrical, which means it attacks identical joints on both sides of the body. Often there is accumulation of liquid in the swelled joints. LA is seen to attack mostly areas far away from the body for example: fingers, wrists, knees, feet, toes, elbows and hands. 

Caused due to infection inside the synovium due to bacteria, fungi or viruses. The infection spreads through circulation of these bacterias in the body and gradually affecting the joints. Patients already suffering from any other types of arthritis are prone to developing IA.

Observed in children. The symptoms are occasional evening fever, poor appetite, weight loss followed by rashes on the arms and legs. The patients frequently limp and experience sore at the wrist, finger or knee. The joints appear larger due to swelling. The sufferings include pain and stiffness at the neck or hips.

PA is a popular inflammatory skin disease, seen among 1- 3% of the white European population. The usual symptoms for PA are; pain, swelling and stiffness at the joints displaying either redness or felt warm if touched. Swellings appear as a sausage especially at the fingers and toes. Often, lower back pain or tail bone pain can also be felt.

Defined as a disorder caused due to musculoskeletal pain and fatigue. Causes can be psychological stress, physical trauma or infection. Recent surveys indicate that women are more prone to  Fibromyalgia than men. Based on studies it appears that the disease runs in the families. So there is a good chance of genetic mutations being the prime cause.

As we have already seen, arthritis belongs to two main categories: OA and RA.  OA is the most common and often starts due to wear and tear of the cartilage tissue around the bones. OA is viewed as common ailment related to the ageing process. While RA is caused by the body’s immune system that affects the joints by attacking the cartilage.
The bottom line is there nothing like a single cause for arthritis. Often it can be a mix of causes and also varies with the type.
